Abstract: Starting with the results of the probabilistic safety study of a nuclear power plant with a high temperature reactor (HTR-1160), accident consequences and risk sssessments have been performed for the site location Schmehausen near Hamm (FRG). The calculations were accomplished using the accident consequence model of the German Risk Study (version UFOMOD/B3), which was modified with respect to (1) the longer duration of releases compared with light water reactors, (2) the application to a single site and (3) essential scientific findings became known since the conception of the first accident consequence models. The accident consequence assessments showed that no early fatalities (death due to acute radiation syndrome) will occur. Late fatalities (death from leukemia and cancer) were estimated at all release categories due to the applied linear dose-risk relationship. The dominating exposure pathway was evaluated to be the internal exposure by ingested radioactivity. Theoverwhelming part of late fatalities was calculated from radiation doses below the dose limits of the German Radiation Protection Law (§28(3)). The collective risk (product of mean collective damage and frequency) was assessed to be - dependent on the plant concept - 0.35/a and 0.028/a respectively.
